St. Pete Trolley Crashes Into Multiple Cars

According to authorities, a St. Pete trolley crashed into multiple cars Wednesday after a Chrysler sedan ran a red traffic light.

The crash occurred at 10:05 a.m. at the intersection of Central Avenue and 16th Street North, police said.

After a preliminary investigation, authorities found that the Chrysler sedan drove through a red light as the St. Pete trolley crossed Central Avenue with a green light. Moments later, the trolley t-boned the left side of a Pacifica, and continued to plow down the side of the street, taking out multiple cars.

The St. Petersburg Police traffic investigators closed the intersection for hours while they conducted an investigation.

Authorities do not believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash. They said had the trolley not been stopped by the parked cars, there would have been more injuries.

Police said the minivan driver, a woman in her 70s, went to an area hospital to treat her injuries. She is in critical condition but stable, authorities added. About a half-dozen passengers on the St. Pete trolley went to a hospital with minor injuries. Other passengers declined medical treatment on the scene.
