
An 81-year-old Tampa man died after driving through a construction fence and struck an excavating machine, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
His passenger, a 13-year-old girl from Tampa, suffered serious injuries.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday off Wiregrass Ranch Boulevard outside the Walmart store at 28500 State Road 54.
The driver failed to stop at the end of the road and drove through a fence blocking off a construction site. His car struck a John Deere construction excavator.
The man was wearing his seatbelt during the crash, but his passenger was not wearing a seatbelt.
