Bicyclist Dies After Getting Hit by FedEx Truck

A bicyclist dies after he was hit by a FedEx truck in Pinellas County Tuesday night.

The crash occurred about 7:19 p.m. Tuesday at 71st Street and 50th Avenue N, the Florida Highway Patrol reported.

Troopers said a 25-year-old man from St. Petersburg was driving the FedEx truck north on 71st Street. The bicyclist was also going north in front of the truck driver. The bicycle didn’t have any light on it, and the truck driver didn’t immediately see the cyclist. Once he did, he took “evasive action to avoid a collision,” a news release from the Highway Patrol states.

The FedEx truck then began to rotate on the road, which was wet, and the back of the pickup truck hit the bicyclist. The pickup truck also collided with a van going south on 71st Street. The FedEx driver nor the driver of the minivan were injured.

The bicyclist, a 54-year-old man, died later at a hospital.

No other details, including the names of the people involved, were released.
