Bicycle Safety and our Community

Many people in our community choose to bike and it’s not hard to see why given that we live in such a beautiful area. Unfortunately, sometimes there are tragic incidents where bicyclists end up injured or sometimes even killed as a result. One such incident occurred yesterday in Clearwater, around 10PM last night a bicyclist was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Cleveland Street and Fredrica Avenue. The bicyclist that was hit was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg and is listed in critical condition and the most tragic part of this entire situation is that the driver who hit the victim left the scene, offered no assistance to the injured man and neglected to call 911.

Nobody can prevent the disturbing act of a hit and run, but there are a few measures you can take to help ensure your biking experience is as safe as possible. The most important yet also the most overlooked tip is to make sure your helmet fits correctly and that you wear your helmet. This can save your life because according to data published by the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) in 2014, “helmet use has been estimated to reduce the odds of head injury by 50 percent, and the odds of head, face, or neck injury by 33 percent.” Another important thing to remember is that if you are riding at night, you should wear bright colored clothing and a reflective vest in addition to having reflectors placed on your bike so that cars can see you more easily.

Over the past 10 years our firm has successfully recovered needed compensation for bicyclists and their families that have been hurt or killed by the carelessness of automobile drivers throughout the Tampa Bay community.  Protect you and your family by making sure you have uninsured motorist (UM) coverage, preferably stacking uninsured motorist coverage.  We have recovered hundreds of thousands of dollars in UM claims when the at-fault driver is not adequately insured or leaves the scene of an accident.

We hope that these tips help and that everyone stays safe while they are out riding in our community. If tragedy does strike however and you are in an accident or sustain an injury, please contact us for a free, no obligation initial consultation.  At PERENICH The Law Firm we have the experience, knowledge and reputation to successfully fight for you and your family.
